Initiatives on Building Information Modeling (BIM) & Construction Information Modeling / Management (CIM)

The civil engineering consulting industry has been facing various issues such as decline in working-age population, increased national resilience projects in Japan, and retirement of veteran engineers. It is therefore imperative to improve work productivity. 

We proactively work on BIM/CIM, the core of DX (Digital Transformation), for contributing to its promotion in the whole civil engineering consulting industry in addition to promoting DX within the firm to enhance the in-house business process efficiency.

Development of BIM / CIM Model

Since the introduction of three-dimensional road design CAD in the early 1990s, we have been using three-dimensional data for civil engineering facility design for about 30 years. With accumulated know-how over many years, we can create highly accurate three-dimensional models even for civil engineering plans with complicated shapes.

In recent years, we have further enhanced its technical capability through the work experience of the i-construction promotion projects under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT). Now, we are able to create three-dimensional data for ICT construction even for complicated earthwork shapes like an interchange.

Additionally, we have also been working on improving the efficiency and automation of 3D model creation by utilizing the customization functions of CIM software.

This is a great potential for efficiency improvements, as tasks that would take a full day using conventional methods can be handled in a matter of minutes. 

Visualization of BIM / CIM models using Virtual Reality (VR)

BIM / CIM model can also be used to create realistic virtual reality (VR) content.
In the past, 3D models were created just for the purpose of creating such content. However, by using the BIM / CIM models, the below contents can be created in a short time.

Technology Development for the Coming Era of Metaverse

We have been conducting research and development on further use of BIM / CIM. The images below show examples of remote collaboration by placing a BIM / CIM model in a virtual conference room or exhibition hall built on the metaverse.

The COVID-19 pandemic has ushered in an era in which telework has become the new normal. However, the quality of communication in the current Web conference using a 2D display will inevitably deteriorate compared to face-to-face meetings. The VR conference using metaverse enables us to communicate as if it were a face-to-face meeting and to view the BIM / CIM model in full size and stereoscopic view. As if participating in a tour of the completed site, it is possible to view the plan and discuss it during the design process.
